Costa Rica Stays Positive After Losing To Argentina

    Costa Rica Soccer

    Costa Rica Soccer

    By Adam Williams
    Tico Times Staff

A new year, a new coach and new crop of players didn’t merit new results for the Costa Rican national soccer team on Tuesday night, as the Ticos fell 3-2 against Argentina in an international friendly match in San Juan, Argentina. Despite the result, La Sele, the nickname of the Costa Rican team, can extract some positives from the first match of the year, which will undoubtedly be considered a “rebuilding” year for the team in the wake of the failure to qualify for the World Cup in 2009.

Fielding a team comprised of younger players, several of whom have never played for the national team, the new look Ticos allowed a 79th minute goal to Argentine forward Franco Jara to give Argentina the 3-2 win. Costa Rica had tied the game in the 76th minute on a goal by 20-year old forward Diego Madrigal, and, after falling behind in the 79th minute, failed to take advantage of several opportunities in the final 10 minutes to tie the game.
Argentina entered the game ranked as 8th best team in the world by the FIFA international soccer rankings.
“We demonstrated to our country that there is quality here,” said forward Diego Estrada. “We played … without fear. That is the idea of this team, which is the one coach González has instilled in us. Towards the end we controlled them on their home field and were unlucky not to get the tie.”
This loss for La Sele, unlike some of the crucial defeats of 2009, carries little significance for the team. During the next few months, the Ticos will play several “international friendly” matches that will serve as tune-up games for teams participating in the 2010 World Cup, such as Argentina. Though Costa Rica won’t be vying for a World Cup slot, the upcoming games against Chile, France and Switzerland (all World Cup qualifying teams) will help forge the next crop of Tico national team players.

Gonzalez, who was the former coach of the under-20 national team, will most likely experiment with a mix of young players and veterans, as he did Tuesday night, to try to find a formula that will lead Costa Rica into a new era.

“The personality of this team fills me with hope,” said Ronald Gonzalez, who took over as interim head coach in November of last year. “What interests me the most is the competitive growth of some of the younger guys. Starting now, the next stage of Costa Rican soccer has a bright future.”
Aside from the handful of international friendly matches in the upcoming months, the next round of games for La  Sele and González will arrive in 2011, when Costa Rica will play qualifying games for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

    The women’s side

On Thursday, the women’s under-20 team will play in the semifinals of the North and Central American (CONCACAF) championships, being played in Guatemala. The Ticas will play the U.S. women’s U-20 team at 1:30 p.m. (Central/Costa Rican time). The other semifinal game will pair Canada against Mexico at 4:30 p.m.
The two winners will play in the finals on Saturday, and will also earn a spot in the 2010 U-20 Women’s World Cup, to be held in Germany in November. The two losing teams will compete in the third place game on Saturday. The winner of the third place game will also earn a spot in Germany 2010.

Daily Surf Report: North, Central, and South Pacific Coast: Costa Rica

North, Central, and South Pacific Costa Rica

Macking Waves in Costa Rica Today

    SURF:

    4-6 ft

shoulder high to 1 ft. overhead

The waves picked up again this morning, but the swell isn’t really working right for some beaches, main peaks at breaks such as, Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Santa Taresa and etc. are weird with strong currents sweeping through the line up. There were some fun waves down the beach, but overall, the swell is too mixed up. The tide is going to be low the rest of the day and

the winds will have to get better. We had light offshore to variable winds with glassy surfing conditions, but it has come onshore since about 10:00am.

If you are planning a trip to Costa Rica and want more surfing information, contact

    CostaRica-MLS.com

    WEATHER:

    Air Temp: 91°

    Water Temp: 78-82°

We had sunny skies with light offshore winds early, turning onshore later in the day. Just another beautiful day in Costa Rica.

Island Sanctuary : Chira Island, Costa Rica

    View from Chira Island

    CostaRica-MLS.Com

Island Sanctuary Information | Click Here

The new and exciting development “Island Sanctuary” comes from the same developers of Las Brisas Cielo, Ventanas San Mateo, and Peublo Escondido. The owners, who have been in Costa Rica the past eight years are ecstatic about their new development, saying, “We believe that our products represent the best that Costa Rica has to offer and the best values.  We believe that the island Sanctuary is the best offering we have ever assembled thus far.”

It is located on an island in the bay of Nicoya… a 15 to 20 minute boat ride from the mainland.   Isla Chira is almost like stepping back in time, and is virtually unknown, even among locals.

The island “feel” is like how Costa Rica must have felt nearly a century ago.   It is pristine, the surroundings are gorgeous and untouched, views are to die for, there are no traffic jams, no pollution, no crime, no casinos, no discos, and no tourist resorts.  In short, the island is a tropical paradise.

    Rendering of "Island Sanctuary" Bungalow

It is large enough so that most will never be bored.  It has a 30 mile circumference with ten totally separate beaches and large stretches of land that have never been explored.   And, the inhabitants of the island make their living the same way that their fathers and grandfathers did, almost exclusively fishing or farming.

The location of the sanctuary is on the top of a mountain with 360 degree views of surrounding mountains, the island and all of its bays, inlets, and small village, and of course the surrounding ocean with its other smaller islands.   The views are unequaled anywhere in Costa Rica.  Island living might not be for everyone, but it is for those seeking an escape and a haven from a world that has grown increasingly more frenzied, Chira is that refuge.  It is the space where nourishment and regeneration takes place.  Chira is peace, solitude and offers Costa Rica at its best and most unspoiled.

Rendering of "Island Sanctuary" Bungalow 2

The first phase of the “island sanctuary” project consists of 12 properties, with the phase itself being 5 acres total land.  It is located on the top of the island’s second tallest mountain and contains vistas that not only stretch for 360 degrees but contain a panorama of mountains, islands, bays and inlets, rivers and the surrounding ocean, that can literally not be duplicated anywhere else in the country.

Each property contains 500 sq. meters (a meter being equal to approximately a yard plus 10%).   Common area per occupant will comprise of more than twice that amount per person.  The common area will ensure sufficient space between each property, and or bungalow.

Property prices are $28,500 and financing is available with 50% down.  Purchasers must follow approved building plans although not required to use our builders.  Approval must be given before building can commence.

There are three (at present) structures which can be chosen from.  All utilities with the exception of telephone are included in the pricing and gas (propane) will be used for cooking, hot water and wherever else appropriate, all other is electric and water is public.  The structures are hardwood and concrete (hardwoods will be primarily teak and pochote).   Roofs are metal, all wiring is standard gauge, septic is standard and built to Costa Rican standards as well.  There will be fans in each bungalow and screens on all windows and doors.  The price of the home and lot will initially be $62,500 and $67,500 for the A frame model.
